ALL ABOUT CHANDRAYAN-2
India’s elite lunar space mission program or moon mission.
Today we will see some of the interesting facts and details about Chandrayaan-2
#Chandrayaan-2 is India’s elite moon landing mission after Chandrayaan-1.
Chanadrayaan in Sanskrit means - Moon Vehicle.
Chandrayaan-2 is developed by the Indian Space Research Organisation (#ISRO ).
The moon landing mission is planned to be launched by a Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle Mark III (GSLV Mk III).
Included in the payload of Chandrayan-2 is a lunar orbiter, lander and rover.
Name of the Lander is “Vikram” - named after the father of Indian Space Program - Vikram Sarabhai.
Name of the rover is “Pragyan” - meaning wisdom in Sanskrit.
All the payload components are developed indigenously by ISRO.
The main scientific objective of the Chandrayaan-2 Mission is to map the location and abundance of water on the lunar surface.
Chandrayaan-2 aims a soft landing of the lander and the rover in a high plain between two craters, Manzinus C and Simpelius N, at a latitude of about 70° south on the Moon.
The mission is planned to be launched from Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) on Sriharikota Island, Andra Pradesh, India with an approximate lift-off mass of 3,850 kg.
The wheeled rover will navigate on the lunar surface. It will perform on-site chemical analysis. It can relay data to Earth through the Chandrayaan-2 orbiter and lander.
Launch of Chandrayaan-2 was originally scheduled for 14 July 2019 at 21:21 UTC but due to technical snag it was cancelled few minutes before launch.
The total budget of the entire Chandrayan-2 project is approximately 978 Crore INR ( US$141 million ).
A successful landing would make India the 4th country to achieve a soft landing on the Moon, after the space agencies of the USSR, USA and China.
If successful, Chandrayaan-2 will be the second mission to soft land near the lunar south pole after the Chang'e 4, a Chinese spacecraft, which landed in that region on 3 January 2019.
Chandrayaan-2 will land at a latitude further south.
Even though ISRO agreed to collaborate initially with the Russian Federal Space Agency (Roscosmos) in 2008, Russia withdrew from the project in 2015.
Thus ISRO decided to develop all the payload components indigenously.
Objectives of Chandrayaan 2:
The primary objectives of Chandrayaan-2 are to demonstrate the ability to soft-land on the lunar surface and operate a robotic rover on the surface.
Scientific goals include :
Studies of lunar topography
Studying the mineral deposit and composition on the surface of moon.
Studying the elemental abundance
Studying the lunar exosphere, and signatures of hydroxyl and water ice.
The orbiter will map the lunar surface and help to prepare 3D maps of it.
The onboard radar of Chandrayaan-2 will also map the surface while studying the water ice in the south polar region and thickness of the lunar regolith on the surface.
Chandrayaan-2 will inform the location and abundance of lunar water for exploitation by the future lunar base proposed by the Artemis program - whose aim is to land the first woman and next man on Lunar Surface by 2024.
Collaborators are - NASA , European Space Agency and ISRO.
